SUMMARY:Climate Change Portal
DESCRIPTION:This presentation has since taken place\, you can view the film recording here\n \n  \nPhoto: 3rd floor of The Climate Change Portal at NPO co2sos\, Geoffroy. The background building is a virtual model of RL Science museum in Japan\, SCi-Pia. \n  \nTitle: The Climate Change Portal\, a Science basis for ESD: Education for Sustainable Development in collaboration with RL Science museum in Japan \nDate and time: 7 Dec (Sat) at 7:00 am PST/ 15:00 GMT/ 24:00 JST \nTour guide: Hajime Nishimura\, senior staff of Japan Agency for Marine and Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). Yan Lauria in SL \n  \nLocations: \n– Starting point \n– Field study centre at Bowness \n– Chaos and climate prediction \n– Etopia \n  \nAbstract: \nGreta Thunberg\, 16 years old\,  became famous since her solo school strike in 2018. Her movement is spreading in many schools in the world\, and recently\, she had a speech at the UN Climate Action Summit on 23 Sep\, 2019. Aside of her provocative words\, “How dare you!”\, I was surprised how she understood IPCC latest special report on “Global Warming of 1.5 deg C” well. But after her speech\, she got not only lots of applauds but also lots of bashing from all over the world. For example\, above YouTube gets 44 thousand likes and 22 thousand dislikes. This is unusual number of dislikes for a girl’s speech. I doubt haters’ organizational operation. \nGreta said in her speech\, “… if you really understood the situation and still kept on failing to act\, then you would be evil.”  It means she thought before that top-level leaders don’t understand well so still kept on failing to act\, but she came to doubt recently. But I doubt not only President Trump but also any other top-level leaders really understood the IPCC reports because it is impossible for usual people to read and understand more than one thousand pages of full reports. \nSo I made a portal of science basis of Climate Change based on not only IPCC reports but also another latest resources.  \nThere are many graphs and they are difficult for children. And Graphs are 2D\, so it is not always necessary to use 3D space. But seamless 3D space can make possible to arrange them along their  relations and help students to understand. \nAnd I rezzed several teleporters where students can experience CO2 rich world in the past Earth\, vulnerable nature and global situation of the present Earth\, and also experience future sustainable society and learn how to predict the future Earth. \nThis portal could be developed through several times of remote classroom in collaboration with NPO co2sos and RL Science museum in Japan\, Sci-Pia.  \n  \nRemark:  \nI’ll use voice chat\, so please confirm your setting in advance.  \nWe’ll visit texture rich places\, so please set drawing distance less than 200m and clear cache as following. \nOfficial viewer: Ctrl + P > Advanced > click [Clear Cache]  \nFirestorm: Ctrl + P > Network & files > Directories tab > Cache location: click [Clear Cache]\n  \nHajime Nishimura / Yan Lauria \n  \nPrevious work in the Library \nPrevious work in the Film collection \n  \n  \n  \nIs this the first time you will attend a presentation with us?\nFollow this link first.

SUMMARY:Green and Purple: Bioprocesses that use light
DESCRIPTION:This presentation has since taken place\, you can view the film recording here \nAbstract: Light-driven biological processes have the reputation of being very complicated\, but they achieve simple goals. Fundamentally\, light drives the movement of hydrogen ions and electrons to accomplish important tasks including vision\, and the storage of energy in carbohydrates or other molecules.  These processes are mediated by beautiful  molecular structures which rival Rube Goldberg machines in their complexity. We will take a look at some of these structures\, and see the basics of how they work. \n  \nMike J. SUMMARY:"How Data Science is Shaping our Future"
DESCRIPTION:This presentation has since taken place\, you can view the film recording here \nBig Data\, data science and Weak Artificial Intelligence are among the main drivers of economic growth and are shaping the evolution of our society.  In the future most of the professions we know will either disappear or deeply modified by the increasing role played by these technologies. In spite of this\, most governments and public bodies are reacting very slowly to this evolving scenario. In the talk we shall address some of the main pro’s and con’s. \n  \n Giuseppe Longo \nProfessor of Astrophysics \n \nAccademico Pontaniano\nAssociate – California Institute of Technology\nAssociate – INFN en INAF \nPrevious work in the Film Collection \n  \n  \n  \nIs this the first time you will attend a presentation with us?\nFollow this link first.

SUMMARY:History of Antibiotic II
DESCRIPTION:This presentation has since taken place\, you can view the film recording here and find the PDF in the library. \nA SHORT HISTORY OF THE ANTIBIOTIC ERA \nby Robert A. Hendrix\, MD \n  \nWe will begin by examining what in the scientific milieu led to the discovery of the first antibiotic. We will consider the transition from Paul Ehrlich and the organically bound Arsenic Compound 606 to the emergence of “natural antibiotics” beginning with Fleming and Penicillin. We will walk through the major advances chronologically\, with attention to diseases that became treatable\, as well as the mechanism of bacteriostatic or bactericidal action on microbes. \nFinally\, we will discuss the possible END of  the ANTIBIOTIC ERA with the widespread emergence off drug resistance as well as destruction of potential sources of new drugs such as reckless clearing of rain forests as ecological and bio-molecular reservoirs. \n  \n  \n \nPrevious presentations of Robert in the Film Collection \nPrevious work from Robert in the Library \n  \n\n\n\nPodcast  Global Outbreak of Fatty Liver Disease\n \n\nPodcast  Doctor’s Tips for Healthier Mind and Body. \n\n\n  \n  \nIs this the first time you will attend a presentation with us?\nFollow this link first.

SUMMARY:This isn't Your Grandparents' Climate
DESCRIPTION:This presentation has since taken place\, you can view the film recording here and find the PDF in the library. \n  \nTHIS ISN’T YOUR GRANDPARENTS’ CLIMATE \nHuman life on Earth has always depended on natural levels of greenhouse gases. The Earth absorbs visible light from the sun and\, to stay in energy balance in the global and seasonal mean\, must emit an equal amount of energy back into space. \nThe effective temperature at which the earth radiates to space is about -18 °C while the global annual surface temperature has been about 15 °C\, a 33 °C difference. \nPartly this separation between surface and effective temperature is a direct effect of the non-precipitating greenhouse gases and partly an effect of their control of the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere\, itself a strong greenhouse gas. \nThere is no physical reason that increases in carbon dioxide and methane from human activities would not continue to increase the mean surface temperature to maintain the effective radiative temperature. \nThis change in global\, annual mean surface temperature is what we call global warming\, but it is only part of the story. \nData on the current low eccentricity of Earth’s orbit and on near constancy of solar energy output eliminate them from consideration as major climate change drivers. \nNor does the observed signature of tropospheric warming coupled with stratospheric cooling fit greater incoming energy. \nClimate change extends the picture\, not just the balance of energy\, but how the world responds to that imbalance. Absorbed heat can go into melting ice\, heating the deep ocean\, or heating the surface. Only the latter restores the energy balance. \nWarmer oceans and melted ice raise sea levels\, threatening existing human use of coastal areas. Ocean temperature/salinity currents can change\, as will atmospheric circulation patterns\, leading to droughts\, floods\, and more intense storm events. \nThe relatively new science of Probabilistic Event Attribution (PEA) estimates the probability that a severe event would occur in our current world versus the probability of the event without human emitted greenhouse gases. \nSome events would have been highly unlikely without human emissions. \nFinally\, multiple human systems have already begun to adapt to changes. Fruit trees that require nights of frost to set fruit\, don’t get them and have to be replaced. \nBanks and insurance companies are already acting to limit their risk from wildfires and flooding. In September\, both “The Economist” and the scientific journal “Nature” had cover issues on Climate. Change is no longer just predicted but here now. \nBy Keith Eric Grant \nKeith has previously participated in a Climate Change debate\, a film recording can be found here \n \n  \nIs this the first time you will attend a presentation with us?\nFollow this link first.

SUMMARY:"Evolutionary Theory Before Darwin"
DESCRIPTION:This presentation has since taken place\, you can view the film recording here and find the PDF in the library. \n  \nThe easy narrative of how people thought of evolution in Europe before On the Origin of Species was that God created everything. Then Darwin came along and showed how it really is. While Darwin was revolutionary\, he did not create his evolutionary theory from whole cloth.\nThis talk will explore more the concepts in the scientific field that set the foundation for Darwin. Scientists like Buffon\, Cuvier\, Lamarck\, Chambers\, Unger\, and Darwin (Erasmus) were instrumental in developing theories on the origins of species and how they interrelate. While some concepts like the scala naturae (ladder of being) were wrong\, they nevertheless provided a foundation for criticism which helped Darwin conceptualize his objections to current thought. Thoughts on how Darwin’s contributions can be thought of as part of a continuity as compared to a foundation for evolution will be the goal of the talk. \n  \nDr. Stephen L. SUMMARY:Whales\, Dolphins\, Porpoises and Us
DESCRIPTION:This presentation has since taken place\, you can view the film recording here and find the PDF in the library. \n  \nA number of years ago\, I was boating in Cape Cod Bay (Massachusetts\, USA) near Stellwagen Banks and watching for whales. I had been there watching for whales and dolphins other times too. This time was different though. As we waited\, a small pod of fin whales passed us by at breakwater speed. Then nothing. Until a young humpback whale surfaced and waved to us. This whale performed a dance of dive and surface for 15 minutes\, circling\, breaching\, submerging. When the whale was done\, he or she lay there looking at me as I was looking back\, eye to eye\, intelligence to intelligence\, only meters apart. Who was I? Who was he or she? \n  \nFor me\, the plight of cetaceans is not just ecological and worrisome\, it’s poignant and personal as well. \nPlease join us at The Science Circle on Sunday\, October 6 at 7 am SLT to talk about amazing and endangered cetaceans of the world. \nRelated article Hypothesis “Staring into the Abyss” \n  \nLinda Morris Kelley (Delia Lake in SL)\nHabitat Curator \nPrevious tours on film \n  \nIs this the first time you will attend a presentation with us?\nFollow this link first.

SUMMARY:Our Place in the Universe 10 AM PDT
DESCRIPTION:“Our Place in the Universe!” \nA public presentation and continued educational journey. \nFacilitated by Phil Youngblood / SL: Vic Michalak \nLet us explore science together in Second Life! \n  \nLast time we started our journey investigating the nature and practice of science over the years. This time we will celebrate World Space Week (4-10 October 2019) by examining our place in the universe. \nIn 1957\, Kees Boeke wrote an essay entitled “Cosmic View: The Universe in 40 jumps”. In 1977\, Charles and Ray Eames produced an award-winning short documentary entitled “Powers of Ten” that investigated the world of the very small (quarks) to the very large (the observable universe). “Cosmic Voyage” in 1996\, presented at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum and in IMAX theaters worldwide\, completed a similar journey. \nIn Part II of our continuing sequence to “Explore Science in Second Life!” we will jump ahead another 20 years or so and create our own unique version of this concept using examples in Second Life and other sources. It is appropriate that we will be meeting in the Planetarium building on Science Circle island. \n———————- \nWe will continue to explore STE(A)M topics regularly by first visiting sites on Science Circle island and then exploring the various fields of science and applied science in Second Life. As we journey together\, we will develop a guide to science in Second Life and other open sources for the purpose of promoting dialogue and education across STEAM disciplines. My aim is to facilitate a journey to create a sustainable forum for learning the science behind the news\, our Science Circle presentations\, and our daily life encounters.  \nWe welcome novices\, experts\, and everyone in between! We will meet for one hour each session. You are welcome to attend any sessions you are able. Biweekly sessions will include presentations\, field trips\, ‘scavenger hunts’\, building things\, visits by experts\, global issues\, and finding answers to questions you have. \nInformation about past and upcoming sessions will be posted on the Science Circle website so you can ‘catch up’ on what you missed and know what is coming next. We are also planning an online discussion area where you can pose or answer questions. \n  \nFacilitated by Phil Youngblood / SL: Vic Michalak \nPrevious work from Phil in the Library \nPrevious presentations in the Film Collection \n \n\nPodcast – Guest: Phil Youngblood \n\n  \n  \nIs this the first time you will attend a presentation with us?\nFollow this link first.

SUMMARY:Virtual Worlds Teaching Manual
DESCRIPTION:Greg Perrier presents and speaks about his “Virtual Wolds Teaching Manual” during the Virtual World MOOC 2019. \n  \n  \n  \nIntroduction \nExperience has shown that Virtual Worlds (VWs) can provide students a unique interactive educational experience that many students see as a fun way to learn. VWs go beyond just offering text to read or a video to watch. In VWs students interact with objects. For example\, a student can study the diagram of an ear online or in a textbook; but in a VW the student can walk through the ear\, a whole different experience. Studies have shown that students learn more from doing\, than from reading or listening to a lecture\, and VWs have the potential to provide this hands-on learning experience in a cost-effective manner. Furthermore\, teaching students to function in virtual environments provides them with skills that will be beneficial\, if not critical\, for success in the future job market. \nThe aim of this manual is to help educators incorporate VWs into their courses in ways that enhance student learning. It will guide one through getting started and show them how to use VWs to make classes more fun and interesting. It will help them avoid the common errors educators make in VWs and allow them to build on the successes of others. The advice presented here comes from work in the VW called Second Life (SL)\, but much of this advice applies to other VWs\, such as Open Simulator and Kitely\, as well as to virtual reality (VR). \n  \nFor teachers who intend to use Second Life in education\, there is the following PDF manual by Gregory Perrier\nEmeritus Faculty\, Biology\nNorthern Virginia Community College\n2018

SUMMARY:Late Ordovician extinction
DESCRIPTION:This presentation has since taken place\, you can view the film recording here. \nWilliam Schmachtenberg \n \nAbstract: \nThere have been at least 5 mass extinctions in the geologic past and some say there was a sixth. Multiple theories from volcanism\, plate tectonics\, biotic interactions\, and changes to ocean chemistry have been proposed for these extinction events. Local field studies in Virginia has shed light on the Late Ordovician extinction when 86% of animals in the ocean perished. These data will be given in the presentation. Studies like this one are important in answering the question will there be another mass extinction in the future? \n  \n  \n  \n  \nby Dr. William F. SUMMARY:Exploratorium Live from Chile
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the auditorium to share this Live experience with us!\nFor those who are wondering what time this is in their own time zone\, there is Time Zone Converter\n\nTOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE: LIVE FROM CHILE\nJULY 2\, 2019\nThis July 2\, the Exploratorium continues its 20-year tradition of bringing live images of eclipses to you—we’re travelling to the National Science Foundation’s Cerro Tololo Observatory in Chile to broadcast a total solar eclipse visible overhead from parts of South America. Experience the wonder wherever you are: enjoy our live broadcast\, available in both English and Spanish on our free iOS and Android apps and this website\, or come to the museum in San Francisco to enjoy the big-screen broadcasts in person\, in addition to a data-driven sonification of live telescope images by composer Wayne Grim and other eclipse programming. \nHow to Build a Sun Viewer\nThere are many ways that you can safely enjoy a partial or total solar eclipse using items from around your house! Dr. Paul Doherty will show you a few of the easiest methods for safe solar viewing. Let us make this perfectly clear: Don’t EVER look directly at the sun\, even when it’s mostly covered during a solar eclipse. If even 1% of the sun is showing around the moon\, it’s enough to damage your eyes! Just as a magnifying glass can focus enough sunlight onto a leaf to start a fire\, the lens in your eye can also focus a sliver of light onto your retina to burn it. And because retinas have no pain receptors\, you can permanently damage your vision without even feeling it happen. \n  \nIs this the first time you will attend a presentation with us?\nFollow this link first.
