SUMMARY:Educare Region Tour
DESCRIPTION:Think back on your first days in a virtual world: A confounding jumble of pop-up options blocking the scenery; embarrassing moments stuck bouncing off walls — that’s what we may recall. The Educare region provides a gentle first-time orientation for newcomers (and hesitant returnees) to explore VW education possibilities. For this ‘tour’ please land at the Orientation Dome\, give it a quick walk-through\, then climb the stairs to the large lit Auditorium above. Throughout your visit\, please try to adopt the perspective of a first-time VW visitor. You’ll be asked to share that imagined experience as you visit Educare region resources and rides. Welcome! \n Field trip by Dr. Steven Van Hook \n   \nBio: Dr. Steven R. Van Hook has developed and taught mixed-format courses in cross-cultural communications and global affairs for the University of California and other universities in the United States and abroad. He’s been a newspaper columnist\, radio talk show host\, TV news anchor\, and television bureau chief in Moscow covering the fall of the Soviet Union. He has directed international public education campaigns through the United States Agency for International Development. He has a PhD specializing in transcultural learning\, and is published in scholarly journals including SAGE\, and UNESCO’s Prospects. SUMMARY:Style Transfer
DESCRIPTION:Style Transfer\nHave you ever wondered what your favourite photos would look like through the eyes of an artist like Van Gogh? I did\, and I was stoked to know that I could do it with artificial intelligence. In this presentation I’ll discuss artificial intelligence-based style transfer methods\, briefly introducing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and general adversarial networks (GANs)\, before talking about two algorithms capable of style transfer in image contexts. \n  \nA presentation by Karthik Prathaban\, a student of AI.

SUMMARY:How Will I Live? The Sociology of Providing for Others
DESCRIPTION:Psychologist Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) defined a hierarchy of needs that motivate human behavior. The most basic of needs are associated with survival\, namely those that answer the question\, “How Will I Live?” These basic needs include breathing\, eating and drinking\, finding shelter\, clothing\, and warmth\, sex\, and sleep. Once these are met\, there are safety needs\, including security\, order\, law\, stability\, and freedom from fear. \nConsidering the importance to each individual of gaining access to the resources needed to achieve these needs\, it is small wonder that leaders of societies have developed a variety of ways to control these resources and thereby control members of their society. Bear in mind then that “providing for others” can have both positive and negative connotations for those being provided access to necessary resources. \nIn this presentation and discussion\, we will explore the sociology\, that is the social behavior\, interactions\, and relationships\, associated with the control of these resources\, including the institutions of \n—land ownership \n—employment \n—marriage \n—expanded families and population control \n—gangs \n—nursing homes and other social institutions \n—social services such as the military and religious orders \n—political systems such as totalitarianism\, aristocracy\, oligarchy\, theocracy\, colonialism\, a republic or democracy\, socialism\, and communism \n—restricting privileges like travel and voting \n—liberty \n—patronage \n—feudalism \n—slavery \n—nomadic and hunter-gatherer cultures \n—[Have I missed one?]   \n  \nCovering the entire scope of this topic is a tall order for the single hour we will be together\, but I hope the presentation and discussion will spark your interest in exploring this further. \n  \n\nPresentation by Dr. Phil Youngblood \n  \n \n\n\n\nDr. Phil Youngblood\n\n\nPrevious lectures on film\n\n\nPodcast\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIs this the first time you will attend a presentation with us?\nFollow this link first. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Webb Telescope
DESCRIPTION:The Webb Telescope\nNASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has peered into the chaos of the Cartwheel Galaxy\, revealing new details about star formation and the galaxy’s central black hole. Webb’s powerful infrared gaze produced this detailed image of the Cartwheel and two smaller companion galaxies against a backdrop of many other galaxies. This image provides a new view of how the Cartwheel Galaxy has changed over billions of years.  \nNext steps\nThe observatory has a packed schedule of science programs looking at all kinds of cosmic phenomena\, like planets\, stars\, galaxies\, black holes\, and more. Webb will revolutionize our understanding of the universe — but first\, researchers need time to analyze data and make sure that they understand what they’re seeing.  \n What are your expectations of this revolutionary telescope? What questions could we start answering? Which photo appeals to you the most?  \n  \nIs this the first time you will attend a presentation with us?\nFollow this link first.

SUMMARY:BB: Alzheimer's and Scientific Integrity
DESCRIPTION:For years the leading theory for the development of Alzheimer’s therapies has been the amyloid plaque theory. However\, all the amyloid therapeutics that have been tried\, failed. This has been confusing. Recently\, it was reported that the data for the amyloid plaque theory were probably falsified. Join us to discuss where Alzheimer’s research should go now and the implications of a lost decade of research due to flawed science and possible malfeasance. \nAlzheimer’s study controversy: What does it mean for future research? \nWhat an Alzheimer’s Controversy Reveals About the Pressures of Academia (possible paywall) \nAt an international meeting\, Alzheimer’s researchers are assessing what comes next \nShocking SCIENTIFIC FRAUD allegations against major medical research \n  \nA discussion hosted by Matt Burr at the Light house Cafe   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIs this the first time you will attend a presentation with us?\nFollow this link first.
