Gender and Race in science

Underrepresentation and disparities in treatment within the STEM fields are topics that are more liberally discussed in the modern age. I derived my interest for this topic from the movie: Hidden Figures (2016), which portrayed the brilliance of African American female mathematicians working at NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in the midst of the space race. Circumstances may have improved but gender and racial underrepresentation and varying levels of success between different groups remains an issue. Are these products of stereotyping or ineffective policymaking or does society just need time?
